Vata dosha needs to be balanced with vata pacifying food in the diet. Food that are grounding and building are good for vata dominant individual. Also  soft , warming , nourishing and easily digestible foods should be taken that do not produce gases.

Qualities to prefer when on a Vata Diet

Prefer warm over cold :

 Food should be freshly prepared and warm. Food should not only be warm in temperature but also use warm digestive spices. Avoid drinks that are cold or leftover food from the refrigerator as the inherent the cold qualities. The cooling energy can aggravate Vata.

Prefer Grounding and nourishing foods over Light

Avoid heavy, dense meals in one sitting. Favor eating light, small meals at regular intervals. Foods that are solid,  nourishing and have a stabilizing and grounding influence to the lightness of vata. Minimize the consumption of stimulants like coffee, nicotine and hard alcohol as they disrupt the grounding stability of Vata.

Prefer smooth over rough

To soothe vata’s roughness consume smooth fruits that are riped like banana, plump, melons and berries. There is lot of fiber content in raw fruits and vegetables, which gives them a rough texture.

Prefer moist and oily over Dry

 Consume hydrating foods and vegetables to overcome the dry quality of Vata. Also use high quality oil and ghee for garnishing. Intake lot of fluids in your diet in the form of juice, buttermilk and soups. Take oily foods like yogurt, cheese, whole milk, coconut and nuts.  Consume liquids preferably at warm or room temperature. Avoid foods like popcorns, chips, biscuits, white potato and dried fruits.
