Vata dosha is the “king of dosha” because it governs the major body function and gives motion to other dosha called kapah and pitta. When Vata is imbalanced for a long time then kapah and pitta also get imbalanced.

Vata dosha is the energy of movement. Functions such as elimination of waste, heart function, circulatory system, nervous system, movement of feelings and thoughts, respiration, communication, hearing, touch and all the physical movements is associated with Vata. Vata is also present in the joints and hollow spaces of the body.

Physical Features of Vata Body Type

Vata body type have thin frames, boney structure, long lean legs, narrow shoulders and hips. Their facial features are small and petite.

Eating dry, cold, bitter, pungent tasting food causes Vata imbalance. Dry emotions and cold behavior also cause Vata imbalance.

Traveling, stress, grief, surgery, child birth, late night activity, irregular schedules, suppression of natural urges, excessive exercise, work or sex, and a dry/rough/raw diet are common aggravating factors.

According to Ayurveda, Vata season starts from late fall into early winter. For a Vata individual their hands and feet remain cold in winters. Cold weather conditions can aggravate Vata.
